How to Play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe is played on nine tic-tac-toe boards arranged in a 3x3 grid. You play X and always move first. The twist: the cell you choose decides where your opponent must play next. Pick the top-right cell of any small board, and your opponent is sent to the top-right board. Win a small board with three marks in a row to claim its square on the big grid, and claim three boards in a row to win the match. If you are sent to a board that is already won or full, you may play in any open board instead.

If every board finishes without anyone lining up three claimed boards, the player who claimed more small boards wins - and if both claimed the same number, the game is a draw. Face four AI difficulty levels or challenge a friend in real-time online multiplayer.

Strategy Tips

• Every cell is an address - before you play, check which board your move sends the opponent to. A winning cell that hands them a free win on the big grid is a losing move.
• Avoid gifting free choice - sending your opponent to a board that is already won or full lets them play anywhere. Late in the game, that freedom is often decisive.
• Fight hardest for the center board - it sits on four of the eight big-grid lines, twice as many as an edge board. The same logic makes center cells valuable inside each small board.
• Build double threats on the big grid - two claimed boards on two different lines can't both be blocked. Steer the game so your small-board wins converge on intersecting lines.
• Sacrifice dead boards - if a small board is unwinnable, use moves there purely for their sending power: dump the opponent into boards where they can't make progress.
